(a) The Sheriff of Mobile County shall continue to receive the annual salary the sheriff is receiving on June 1, 2024, for the remainder of the current term of office which commenced in January 2023.(b) In addition to the salary provided in subsection (a), the sheriff shall be entitled to an additional expense allowance of thirty-nine thousand dollars ($39,000) per year, payable in equal monthly installments from the general fund of the county. This expense allowance shall be in addition to all other compensation or benefits provided to the sheriff and shall be treated the same as salary for retirement purposes.(c) Effective at the end of the term of office of the sheriff commencing in January 2023, the expense allowance provided in subsection (b) shall be void, and the annual salary of the sheriff shall be increased by thirty-nine thousand dollars ($39,000) per year effective beginning the next term of office of the sheriff commencing in January 2027.(d) In addition to any other compensation provided to the sheriff, the sheriff shall be entitled to cost-of-living increases or other uniform increases in compensation in f commencing in January 2027.(d) In addition to any other compensation provided to the sheriff, the sheriff shall be entitled to cost-of-living increases or other uniform increases in compensation in the same manner and amount provided to county employees. The amount of any cost-of-living increase or other uniform increase shall be based on the total compensation of the sheriff, including any salary and expense allowances provided to the sheriff. During any term of office of the sheriff, any cost-of-living increase or other uniform increase shall be paid as an expense allowance to the sheriff, and, effective beginning the next term of office of the sheriff, any cumulative uniform increases during a term shall be converted to salary. Any expense allowance provided to the sheriff shall be treated the same as salary for retirement purposes.(Act 2024-196, §2.)
