Section 45-55-101 - Membership; Districts

(a) The electorate for the Pike County Board of Educationshall include all qualified voters in Pike county, including those residingwithin the City of Troy. (b) The Pike County Board of Education shall consist of sixmembers, each elected from a separate single-member district.(c) Members representing Districts 5 and 6 shall be electedin 1994. Members representing Districts 1 and 2 shallbe elected in 1996. Members representingDistricts 3 and 4 shall be elected in 1998. Allmembers shall be elected for terms of six years in accordance with Sections 16–8–2 and 17–2–5.(d) Each board member shall be a resident of the single-member districtfrom which the member is elected. The residency shall have been establishedat least one year before the generalelection at which the member is elected.(e) The six districts shall be the same as those districts used in the 1992elections for the Pike County Board of Education and the Pike County Commission.(f) Following the release of any federal decennial census, the board, bymajority vote, may change the boundaries of the six single-member districts in order to comply with the one-person one-vote requirement ofthe

Any reviseddistrict arrangement to be used, in whole or in part, shall be approved by theboard not later than 180 days prior to the election in which it will first beused.(g) No change to the boundaries of existing districtsshall be adoptedby the board unless the boardfirst shall have advertised in a newspaper of general circulation in PikeCounty for at least two consecutive weeks the time and place of the meeting atwhich the change will be voted upon. Theadvertisements shall include either (1) a map of the county indicating theproposed district boundaries, or (2) notification that a map indicating theproposed district boundaries is available for inspection at a specific publiclocation, where the map shall be displayed for at least two consecutive weeks preceding the meeting of the board at which the resolution shall be considered, or both.(h) Any resolution changing district boundaries shall describe the reviseddistrict boundaries by reference to standard census
