(a) The Sheriff of Pike County, or the authorized agentsof the sheriff may operate a jail store for prisoners within the confines ofthe county jail. The jail store shallbe operated to serve the needs of the jail population.(b)(1) The sheriff shallestablish and maintain a law enforcement fund in a bank located in Pike County. All proceeds collected under this sectionshall be deposited by the sheriff into the law enforcement fund.(2) The sheriff shall keep an account of all jailstore sales and transactions of the law enforcement fund for audit by theDepartment of Examiners of Public Accounts.The jail store account and law enforcement fund shall be audited at thesame time other accounts of the sheriff are audited. The Department of Examiners of Public Accountsshall submit a copy of theaudit to the sheriff within 30 days of its completion.(c) All profits realizedin the operation of the jail store shall be expended at the discretion of the sheriff for lawenforcement purposes in Pike County, including office expenses, that are in theinterest of the public.(d) Theestablishment of the law enforcement fund and the use of the proceeds shall notdiminish or take cement purposes in Pike County, including office expenses, that are in theinterest of the public.(d) Theestablishment of the law enforcement fund and the use of the proceeds shall notdiminish or take the place of any other source of income established for thesheriff or the operation of the office.(e) Any actionsrelating to the operation of a jail store in the county jail prior to June 18,1999, are ratified and confirmed. Anyexisting proceeds derived from the operation of a jail store in the county jailprior to June 18, 1999, shall be deposited into the law enforcement fund created by this section.(Act 99–545, p. 1179, §§ 1–5.)
