17Disability Determination.When any firefighter or policeman is confined to his or her bed or is under the care of a physician for 15 days ormore by reason of sickness or other disability not otherwise provided for, heor she shall be paid weekly, but not for more than 12 weeks, from the fund, thesum of twenty-five dollars ($25); however, if the policeman or firefighter has beenin the service of the department of which he or she is a member for a periodof 10 years or more and the board determines at the end of 12 weeks that his orher disability is permanent, he or she shall be retired and paid in accordancewith Section 45–57A–62.16. But nofirefighter or policeman shall be paid any benefits or relief under this section ifhis or her sickness or disability was caused by dissipation, immoral conduct,or vicious habits, or if during the time of his or her disability he or she receiveshis or her regular compensation from the city.
