§ 45-57a-63-196

No member of the council, officer, or employee electedor appointed shall be interested, directly or indirectly, in any contract forwork or material, or the profits thereof, or services to be furnished orperformed for the city, and no member of the council, officer, or employeeshall be interested, directly or indirectly, in any contract for work ormaterial, or the profits thereof, or services to be furnished or performed forany person, firm, or corporation operating interurban railway,street railway, gas works, electriclight or power plant, heating plant, telegraphline, or telephone exchange within the territorial limits of the city. No member of the council, officer, oremployee of the city shall be interested in or an employee or attorney of anycorporation operating any public service utility within the city. No member of the council, officer, or employee shall receive, directly orindirectly, from any person, firm, or corporation operating within theterritorial limits of the city any interurban railway, railway, street railway,gas works, water works, electric light or power plant,

rectly, from any person, firm, or corporation operating within theterritorial limits of the city any interurban railway, railway, street railway,gas works, water works, electric light or power plant, heating plant, telegraphline, or telephone exchange, or other business using or operating under apublic franchise, and frank, free pass, free ticket, or free service, or acceptor receive, directly or indirectly, from any person, firm, or corporation, anygift or other thing of value, or any service upon terms more favorable than aregranted to the public generally. Any violationof this section shall be a misdemeanor, and uponconviction thereof, the guilty person shall be punished by a fine of not lessthan one hundred ($100) nor more than three hundred ($300) dollars, and may be imprisoned in the county jailfor not more than 90 days, and his or her office shall be vacated. The prohibition of free transportation shall not apply topolicemen or firefighters in uniform nor to policemen in the discharge of theirduty; nor shall service to cityofficials in their official capacity heretofore provided by any franchise or ordinance be affected by this section.
