(a) A person may not serve as a resident or intern without a permit issued under this section. (b) For the limited purpose of residency or internship, the board may issue a permit to an applicant without examination if the applicant meets the requirements of AS 08.64.200(a)(1) and applicable regulations of the board, meets the requirements of AS 08.64.279, pays the required fee, and has been accepted by an eligible institution in the state for the purpose of residency or internship. (c) A permit issued under this section is valid for the period specified by the board, but not to exceed 36 months after the date of issue. Upon application by a person who pays the required fee and has been accepted by an eligible institution in the state for the purpose of residency or internship, the board may renew a permit issued under this section for a period specified by the board, but not to exceed 36 months after the date of renewal.
