'Highway patrol service' means service rendered as a member of the California Highway Patrol, only while the member is receiving compensation from the state for that service, except as provided in Article 4 (commencing with Section 20990) of Chapter 11.(Amended by Stats. 1996, Ch. 906, Sec. 8. Effective January 1, 1997. Note: Prior to January 1, 1996 (when the reorganization by Stats. 1995, Ch. 379, took effect), these provisions were in Section 20802.
