(a) The owner or person in lawful possession of any motor vehicle which is stolen in this state shall make a report in writing to the office of the local police department in the municipality in which the theft occurred or to the office of the state police troop having jurisdiction over the municipality in which the theft occurred. The Commissioner of Motor Vehicles shall adopt regulations in accordance with the provisions of chapter 54 which provide a standard, uniform procedure for reporting the theft of a motor vehicle to any state or local law enforcement officer.(b) Each insurance company which issues in this state automobile theft insurance shall, as a condition precedent to settling any claim, require the insured to file a report in accordance with the provisions of subsection (a) of this section.(P.A. 82-450; P.A. 83-206.)History: P.A. 83-206 required a person in lawful possession of a motor vehicle which is stolen to report its theft to police.
