Section 47-17-82 - Amount of death benefits; provisions for payment of death benefits; refund of dues paid

(a) Following the death of a retired member or an active member in good standing, upon application to the board and proof of death, the member's designated beneficiary shall be paid the sum of $5,000.00.(b) The designated beneficiary of any dues-paying member who receives an injury by external accident or violence arising out of and in the course of the employment as a peace officer and not resulting from willful misconduct of such officer, which injury is the direct and proximate cause of death within 12 months of the date of the injury, shall, upon application to the board and lawful proof of such injury and death as the direct and proximate result thereof, be paid a sum of $10,000.00.(c) Applications for such benefits shall contain such information as the board shall require.(d) If the amount of dues paid by the member prior to vesting is greater than the amount of death benefit contained in subsection (a) or (b) of this Code section, the designated beneficiary will receive a refund of the dues paid.Amended by 2024 Ga.
