When a policy providing automobile liability coverage is cancelled, other than for nonpayment of premium, or in the event of failure to renew a policy providing automobile liability coverage to which section 6 of this chapter applies, the insurer shall notify the named insured of his possible eligibility for automobile liability insurance through other insurers or through the automobile liability assigned risk plan.
