226.45 Reimbursement to county or state. If a patient is not receiving medical assistance under chapter 249A and the amount in the account of any patient in the patients’ personal deposit fund exceeds two hundred dollars, the mental health institute may apply any of the excess to reimburse the county of residence or the state when the patient is a resident in another state or in a foreign country, or when the patient’s residence is unknown, for liability incurred by the county or the state for the payment of care, support, and maintenance of the patient, when billed by the county of residence or by the department.
