546.28 ASSESSMENT OF DAMAGES WITHOUT ANSWER. A defendant, without answering, may appear in the action and demand in writing an assessment of the amount which the plaintiff is entitled to recover; and thereupon the court, upon application of either party, shall direct the manner of such assessment.
