The board of supervisors of any county who find that the public interest of the county, or any supervisors' district or districts within the county, will be conserved thereby, may purchase, operate, and maintain fire trucks, pumps, tanks, trailers, fire hose, fire extinguishers, and other fire fighting equipment, and may contract with one or more towns or municipalities in the county for keeping and storing same, or any part of same, and assisting in the use and operation thereof. Such board may pay its part of the cost of such purchasing, operation and maintenance from the general fund of the county if the entire county participates in the provisions of this section, or from a special fund to be known as the 'Fire Prevention Fund' if less than all five districts participate.
