The sureties of any person bound to keep the peace, may, at any time, surrender their principal to the sheriff of the county in which the principal was bound, under the same rules governing such surrender in criminal cases; and the person surrendered may give a new bond, to be approved by the sheriff, in the same sum and with like sureties as the former, for the residue of the time for which he was bound to keep the peace, and thereupon he shall be discharged.Codes, 1880, § 3136; 1892, § 1488; 1906, § 1560; Hemingway's 1917, § 1322; 1930, § 1348; 1942, § 2595.
