'Witness' as used in Sections 99-9-27 through 99-9-35 shall include a person whose testimony is relevant and material and desired in any proceeding or investigation by a grand jury or in a criminal action, prosecution or proceeding.'State' as used in Sections 99-9-27 through 99-9-35 shall include any territory of the United States and the District of Columbia.Codes, 1942, § 1893; Laws, 1938, ch. 261.
