1. At the request of a county sheriff or the chief of police of a city, the Director may authorize the transfer of a person detained in a local facility to an institution or facility of the Department for safekeeping. The Director shall determine whether the person is to be transported by the staff of the Department or by the staff of the county sheriff or the chief of police who requested the transfer. 2. The Director shall determine the cost of the custody and care of a person transferred pursuant to subsection 1 which may be borne by the local government affected.
