1. Except as otherwise provided in subsection 2, the public school year commences on the 1st day of July and ends on the last day of June. 2. After notification to the Superintendent of Public Instruction that an extended school year program will be operative, any county school district may request extension of the school year beyond the last day of June for each year of such program.
