1. The Board of Regents may establish an electronic payment system to pay the salaries and wages of academic staff and employees of the System through the use of direct deposit. 2. If the Board of Regents establishes an electronic payment system pursuant to subsection 1, upon application by a member of academic staff or an employee, the Board of Regents may waive the participation of the member of academic staff or employee in the electronic payment system established pursuant to subsection 1 if: (a) Participation in the electronic payment system by the member of academic staff or employee would cause the member of academic staff or employee to suffer undue hardship or extreme inconvenience; or (b) The member of academic staff or employee does not have an account at a financial institution that accepts direct deposit. 3. As used in this section 'direct deposit' means payment of the salary and wages of a person by causing the net amount of such person’s salary and wages to be deposited in an account maintained in a financial institution in the name of the person.
