1. If a vacancy occurs on the board of directors of a county fire protection district, the remaining directors shall fill the vacancy by appointing a qualified elector to serve during the rest of the term and until his or her successor is elected and qualified. 2. If the remaining directors fail or refuse to appoint a new director within 30 days after the vacancy occurs, the board of county commissioners shall appoint a person to fill the vacancy.
