1. Except as otherwise provided in subsection 4, each motor carrier operating a commercial motor vehicle in intrastate commerce with a gross vehicle weight rating, a combined gross vehicle weight rating, a gross vehicle weight or a combined gross vehicle weight in excess of 26,000 pounds must: (a) Register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration of the United States Department of Transportation and obtain a USDOT number issued by the United States Department of Transportation; (b) Display the USDOT number as required pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 390.21 on each commercial motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating, a combined gross vehicle weight rating, a gross vehicle weight or a combined gross vehicle weight in excess of 26,000 pounds operated by the motor carrier in intrastate commerce; and (c) Notify the Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of registration or renewal of registration of each such commercial motor vehicle of: (1) The USDOT number of the motor carrier; and (2) The name of the motor carrier responsible for the safety of the commercial motor vehicle. 2.
