534:16 Return of Writ. – The person to whom the writ is directed shall receive it when offered, and, upon payment or tender of the sum indorsed on the writ, if any, shall yield obedience to the command thereof; shall make return thereof to the court or justice, at the time and place therein mentioned; and shall state every cause of taking and detaining the person imprisoned or restrained; all of which shall be made under oath; and he shall also have present the body of such person, unless imprisoned or restrained for some one or more of the causes specified in RSA 534:2.
