Effective: June 30, 2005 Latest Legislation: House Bill 66 - 126th General Assembly The department of health shall administer a program, to be known as the J-1 visa waiver program, for recruiting physicians who received graduate medical education or training in the United States but are not citizens of the United States to serve in areas of the state designated by the United States secretary of health and human services as health professional shortage areas under the 'Public Health Service Act,' 88 Stat. 682 (1944), 42 U.S.C. 254(e), as amended. Under the program, the department of health shall accept and review applications for placement of persons seeking to remain in the United States pursuant to the 'Immigration and Nationality Act,' 66 Stat. 163 (1952), 8 U.S.C. 1182(J)(1) and 1184(l), as amended, by obtaining a waiver of the federal requirement that they return to their home countries for a minimum of two years after completing the graduate medical education or training for which they were admitted to the United States. The department shall administer the program in accordance with the 'Immigration and Nationality Act' and the regulations adopted under it.For each
