Effective: October 24, 2024 Latest Legislation: Senate Bill 144 - 135th General Assembly (A) In accordance with this section, a medication aide who holds a current, valid medication aide certificate issued under this chapter may administer prescription medications to the residents of nursing homes and residential care facilities, but only pursuant to the supervision of a registered nurse or a licensed practical nurse acting at the direction of a registered nurse. (B) In exercising the authority to administer prescription medications pursuant to nursing supervision, a medication aide may administer prescription medications in any of the following categories: (1) Oral medications; (2) Topical medications; (3) Medications administered as drops to the eye, ear, or nose; (4) Rectal and vaginal medications; (5) Medications prescribed with a designation authorizing or requiring administration on an as-needed basis, regardless of whether the supervising nurse is present at the facility. (C) A medication aide shall not administer prescription medications requiring dosage calculations. (D) A medication aide shall not administer prescription medications by any of the following methods: (1) A medication aide shall not administer prescription medications requiring dosage calculations. (D) A medication aide shall not administer prescription medications by any of the following methods: (1) Injection, except for insulin as provided in division (E) of this section; (2) Intravenous therapy procedures; (3) Splitting pills for purposes of changing the dose being given. (E) A medication aide may administer insulin to a resident by injection, but only if both of the following are satisfied: (1) The medication aide satisfies training and competency requirements established by the aide's employer.
