The governing bodies of the state, county, city or town, as the case may be, may furnish distinctive uniforms for all sheriffs, deputy sheriffs, policemen, town marshals, peace officers and other officers, whose duty is to preserve and enforce public peace. When uniforms are furnished the sheriffs, deputy sheriffs, policemen, town marshals, peace officers, as the case might be, they are required to wear the same while on duty. This act shall not apply to detectives and other officers required to wear street apparel. Laws 1969, c. 188, § 1, emerg. eff. April 17, 1969.
