(a) Until July 31, 2014, any participant in active service who applies for a disability pension shall be entitled to a lifetime annual income in the amount established in § 396f of this title.(b) Beginning on August 1, 2014, the System shall grant a disability pension in accordance with § 396f of this title to any active participant who after serving for five (5) years suffers a disability whether or not it is work-related.(c) Retirement for disability may be granted at the request of the participant or the appointing authority and with the approval of the System.(d) The participant shall be examined by an authorized physician designated by the System, who shall render a report of the matter to the Executive Director.(e) Participants who enroll in the System after August 1, 2014, shall be entitled to the disability benefits established in § 397–397k of this title.
