It shall be compulsory for any owner, officer, agent, manager or assistant of any company, business, institution, establishment, or other organization of whom information is sought by officers or representatives of the officers of the censuses authorized by §§ 1—5 of this title, to answer, correctly and in full, to his best knowledge and belief, all questions asked him through questionnaires prepared therefor, concerning his business or to statistics or records in his custody. Any person violating the provisions of this section by refusing to furnish any information requested shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall, upon conviction thereof be punished by a fine of not less than one hundred dollars ($100) nor more than five hundred dollars ($500), or by imprisonment in jail for a term of not more than three (3) months, or by both penalties, in the discretion of the court; and any person violating the provisions of this section by knowingly furnishing false information, shall be punished by a fine of not more than five thousand dollars ($5,000), or by imprisonment in jail for a term of not more than twelve (12) months, or by both penalties, in the discretion of the court.
