Islands which, through successive accumulations of descending alluviums, are slowly formed in rivers, belong to the owners of the banks or shores nearest to each of them, or to those of both shores if the island is in the middle of the river, and they shall then be divided longitudinally in halves. If a single island thus formed be more distant from one bank than from the other, then the owner of the nearest bank shall be the sole owner thereof.\nHistory —Civil Code, 1930, § 308.
