No officer performing the duties of another office, as authorized and provided in § 547 of this title and no assistant or deputy performing the duties of the principal officer, during a vacancy in the office, or during the disability or temporary absence of the principal officer, shall be, by reason thereof, entitled to any other compensation than that attached to his proper office.
