Elected county sheriffs not exempt from prescribed qualifications--Education and training required.No person may be elected or appointed as a county sheriff who does not meet the same qualifications provided by §23-3-42 for the employment of appointed law enforcement officers. All elected or appointed sheriffs shall successfully complete the same education and training program required by the commission for appointed law enforcement officers. The education and training program shall be completed within twelve months after the officer has been appointed or elected and qualified.
