Any attorney general desiring to retire shall file application with the governor of the state therefor which application shall state with substantial clearness his service as attorney general and benefit base, together with the date upon which he proposes to retire. Upon the receipt of such application, the governor shall examine the same and other pertinent records and shall, after the conclusion of his examination, certify to the director of accounts and/or treasurer of the state the amount of service of such attorney general and his benefit base, together with the date of his retirement. Thereupon such attorney general retiring shall be paid for the remainder of his natural life the sum so calculated and fixed by the governor, which payment shall be in equal monthly instalments.After September 1, 1958, any member of this system eligible for retirement shall be entitled to make application therefor within sixty (60) days following his severance from the office of attorney general as defined in § 8-618.Acts 1953, ch. 81, § 4 (Williams, § 9969.5); 1955, ch. 154, § 2; 1970 (Adj.
