If two or more persons conspire to—\n(1) commit any crime;\n(2) falsely and maliciously complain against another for any crime, or procure another to be charged or arrested for any crime;\n(3) falsely move or maintain any action or proceeding;\n(4) cheat and defraud any person of property by any means which are in themselves criminal, or to obtain money or property by false pretenses; or\n(5) commit any crime injurious to the public health, the public morals, or for the perversion or obstruction of justice or due administration of the laws—\neach shall be fined not more than $1,000 or imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both. If, however, the offense, the commission of which is the object of the conspiracy, is a misdemeanor only, the punishment for such conspiracy shall not exceed the maximum punishment provided by law for such misdemeanor.
