Section 15-5-114 - Persons Not Eligible for Appointment; Criminal History Record Information

15-5-114. Persons not eligible for appointment; criminal history record information. (a) No person may be appointed or employed as a regular policeman or officer of the police department or as a fireman or officer of a fire department who: (i) Has been convicted of, or against whom any indictment or information is pending for any offense, the punishment for which may be confinement in any penitentiary; (ii) Is a notoriously bad character; (iii) Is unable to read and write the English language; or (iv) Lacks ordinary physical courage. (b) A fire department may, as a condition for a position with the department, require applicants to submit to fingerprinting in order to obtain state and national criminal history record information.
